Top Men’s Fashion Trends for SS13
Every year men’s fashion gets a little more exciting; it’s strange that we’ve come full circle – once upon a time men wore more elaborate clothes than women, but at some point in the past century the tides turned, and menswear became a game of back, blue and grey suits, occasionally with a leather jacket thrown in. Well, that’s just not the case any longer, because thanks to a new generation of designers we’re starting to see some exciting trends emerging in menswear, as well as womenswear. This season, we’re looking at Kurt Cobain style grunge fashion, bow ties, watches, baseball caps and denim…
So let’s start looking at the first trend – 90s grunge. It seems lately we’re getting all nostalgic for the 90s, maybe because many of the style influencers out there at the moment were 90s kids. Grunge is a great trend for summer, because it means ¾ length denim, slouchy shirts and biker boots. If you choose a thin, but high quality shirt it will see you through any temperature. This style can flatter any body shape, and will suit most people. If the weather takes a turn for the worse don’t worry, because this trend encourages the wearing of beanie hats!
We’re surprised bow ties are back, but regardless we’re happy of the fact! Bow ties are a great men’s accessory for adding a little colourful or eccentric look to your outfit. Alber Elbaz is the leading bow tie style icon; the Lanvin designer been rocking them for years now, but we’re pretty sure this trend emerged thanks to Matt Smith, the 11th Dr Who, who always teams a bow tie with a tweed jacket and a tucked in shirt. If you’re not ready to wear this trend casually, give it a go at your next formal event.
Watches are always a great menswear trend, but they come and go in various styles. This summer look out for chunkier watches with lots of feature dials, and sporty designs, for a couple of examples head over to 3H Italia. Whether you choose a traditional style with leather and shiny metal details, or you go for a bright coloured toy-style watch, you’ll be right on trend.
Baseball caps, particularly in the ‘snapback’ style are having a resurgence – this might have again come from the 90’s, but the new styles have a more hip-hop edge. They come in bright colours with embellishment details like spikes, studs, gold lettering and more. You’ve got to be brave to pull them off, and wear them with confidence, you can either style them with oversized jumpers and skinny jeans, or vests and denim shorts, but try not to be too neat when you wear them, or you risk looking like Justin Bieber… With this style, being too clean cut just won’t do.
The final trend is denim; so we’re looking at denim jackets, lots of jeans, denim shirts, and the dreaded double denim trend. Double denim might work for celebrities, but trying to pull it off in a normal everyday way is extremely difficult; if you still want to give it a go try adding patches and embellishments to a denim jacket – wear it with a bright plaid or solid colour shirt, and some skinny jeans in a darker denim. Never, under any circumstances wear the same shade of denim both top and bottom, or you’ll risk looking like a bad 90’s photoshoot model. Not a good look!
